The Best Internet Options for Windsor Residents:

Dongles and Satellite Internet: Not a Viable Option

When searching for internet in Windsor, you might have been presented with the options of 5G or LTE rocket stick dongles or satellite internet options, especially if you are just outside the city limits. These do offer high-speed internet but have significant disadvantages.

Let's take a look.

What's wrong with dongles or mobile hotspots?

What are LTE or 5G dongles?

These connect to mobile networks and then let your computer or smart devices connect to the internet through a USB stick or Mobile Hotspot. These are often easy to set up, but they are far from a perfect solution.

Dongles or mobile hotspots often come with restrictive data caps. If you were going to watch Netflix via a LTE dongle, you would hit that data cap in no time. After you've exhausted your allotted data, you could rack up serious bills if you continue using the internet.

There's also the fact that you generally can only use a dongle on one device at a time as they are optimized only for one device.

Satellite Internet's Problems

Satellite internet providers offer high speeds from anywhere and have served Essex & Windsor regions until fixed wireless coverage matured and until cable became more available to additional areas of Windsor. With satellite Internet, you install a satellite dish and your internet is beamed to you from low orbit or high orbit satellites.

The main issue with satellite internet is it can be more expensive and often intermittent. Due to its long travel time, satellite internet has a high latency, which means it generally can't be used for gaming and struggles when used to stream video. Your data would take too long to reach the server and you would experience catastrophic lag.

How to Get Reliable Rural High-Speed Internet in Windsor

We've talked about satellite internet and LTE dongles and shown you why these solutions might not give you the best high-speed internet service. So, what are your options for internet in Windsor, Ontario?

What makes us different from other high-speed internet companies?

Instead of asking you to connect to a LTE base station or a satellite, the better option is fibre, cable, or fixed wireless internet.

What does fixed wireless internet mean?

With fixed wireless internet, a small dish is installed on your home, which connects to a power source, and your router inside your home. The dish communicates with a WaveDirect broadband antenna installed on the ground, providing a faster more reliable service, even during a storm.

WaveDirect also helps Windsor residents to set up networking in your home and get you connected to the right wireless router, giving you excellent Wi-Fi wherever you are in your house.

If fixed wireless is available in your area, the dish we set up on your home connects you to our wireless towers, which are connected to very high-speed fibre internet feed. All you need to connect to our tower is a clear line of sight.

Can you get TV with your Internet?

A regulated IPTV (TV) service is coming soon to WaveDirect's internet customers, providing the popular channels you love at a competitive price.

High-Speed Internet FAQs

What Speeds Can I Get?

The speeds that you'll get will depend on the high-speed internet option available to you. For a fixed wireless connection, how close you are to the base station and how clear a line of sight you have. Most customers choose 15 or 25 Mbps plans to handle their needs if they are outside of Windsor city limits. For cable internet in Windsor, we offer speeds of up to 120 Mbps, depending on your address.

If you are using multiple devices at the same time in your home, or if you use Wifi as the primary way to access the internet in your home, your speeds will vary.

For the best results, we recommend connecting to the router using an Ethernet cable. If you are within the Windsor city limits, you can get 50-120 Mbps speeds with our cable internet service.
